She-Devils

From Montreal, She-Devils want to show you there is a fine line between paying homage to music history and defacing it, as they paint crudely overtop of it with simplistic drawings. Audrey Ann Boucher sings atop of Kyle Jukka’s murky vinyl-sampled sounds and textures. The two performers have no interest in exhibiting any kind of refined musicality, but rather intend on creating impressions that burrow into the heart and imagination. The duo has been writing songs together and performing since the summer of 2014. In January 2016, She-Devils self-released their first EP.

Lucas Haneman Express

The Lucas Haneman Express is a soulful, fun filled and electrifying musical ride. The group's frontman, Lucas Haneman, has long been widely regarded for his distinctive guitar work. Along with Jeff Asselin (drums), Martin Newman (bass/backing vocals) and Megan Laurence (backing vocals), he has found his true means of self-expression. The LH Express is a fresh and funky band with a sound drenched in poignant lyrics and blistering band interplay. On their new album ""Tearing Up The Rails"" (slated for release in late October 2016), the band shows a deep connection to the roots of the blues tradition, with gritty, passionate high energy material, some of which was recorded at legendary Sun Studios in Memphis TN. The band's debut release ""Welcome Aboard"" (released April 2015), is a journey through memorable melodic hooks, gripping guitar solos, and pure soul! The Express's music is a combination of blues, funk, reggae and rock, tied together by musical interaction. Though not your grandparents', or even your parents' version of a Blues band, the Lucas Haneman Express has created an addictive new sound, that when given the chance will certainly win you over. The Lucas Haneman Express has played the RBC's Ottawa Bluesfest for 2 years (back to back), Calabogie Blues and Rib Fest, Kingston Limestone Blues Festival in September 2015, and have performed all over Ontario, Quebec, and even multiple times on world famous Beal Street in Memphis TN. In September 2015 the band won first place in the Ottawa Blues Society's Road To Memphis competition and travelled down to Memphis in January 2016 where they competed and were semifinalists in the ""International Blues Challenge"" alongside bands from all over the globe. They have opened for or performed with artists such as The Downchild Blues Band, bassist extraordinaire Tal Wilkenfeld, Canadian bluesman Jerome Godboo, blues legend Harrison Kennedy, and the John Butler Trio from Australia.

Scary Bear Soundtrack

Founded in 2010 in Ottawa, Canada, Scary Bear Soundtrack is an indie dream pop project, featuring the works of Gloria Guns. Over the years, the act has performed in a number of unusual spaces such as Nunavut and Namibia, following Gloria’s career path as a human rights lawyer and researcher. Gloria’s background in human rights also serves as inspiration for the band’s lyrics, which unabashedly address social issues such as violence against women (in songs like “Fault Lines”), racism (“Asian Fetishist”), and environmental conservation (“Beaver Pond Forest”). Although the band’s lineup has changed over the years to accommodate the band’s various relocations, Scary Bear Soundtrack has always prioritized the inclusion of emerging women artists and people of colour, recognizing the importance of promoting a diversity of voices in the music world. Musically, CBC Radio has compared Scary Bear Soundtrack’s sound to the Postal Service, Stars, and the Cocteau Twins. The band makes ample use of synths and heavy reverb guitars processed through chorus pedals and vintage amps, blending layers of shoegaze with synth pop. The band also often employs complex three-part vocal harmonies, thanks to the band members’ classical music training during childhood.

La Colonie

8:45 PM20:45

Recently appointed president of the Canadian Viola Society in June 2016, Pemi is the founder and artistic director of Warhol Dervish, an original and unorthodox chamber music collective based in Montreal, where he is also a member of two important new music ensembles, Bradyworks and SMCQ. Pemi has premiered numerous works for viola by composers including Scott Godin, Andre Ristic, Linda Catlin Smith, Rose Bolton, Emily Hall, and Nicolas Gilbert, Michael Oesterle, and Tim Brady. Pemi routinely collaborates with musicians outside of the classical world, such as Richard Reed Parry of Arcade Fire, Chilly Gonzales, Patrick Watson, Lukas Ligeti, and has recorded with artists like Socalled, Barr Brothers, Hey Rosetta, to name a few. Pemi is also a member of the indie/rock/classical band, Plumes and the recently formed garage/new music band, Want Slash Need. In the sphere of historical performance, Pemi is a member of Ensemble Caprice, with whom he has recorded seven discs for Analekta, winning one Juno in the process, as well as Daniel Taylor's Theatre of Early Music.

Thomas Annand has been delighting audiences and critics alike with his multi-faceted talents as organist, harpsichordist and conductor for over 20 years. Founded in 2007, the Montreal-based Warhol Dervish is an unorthodox chamber music collective, gathering together some of the most interesting and creative musicians in Canada. Pioneers and visionaries, Warhol Dervish is made up of early-music HIPsters, new music specialists, ardent 19th century romantics, pop collaborators, rockstar wannabes, meditators and yogis who seek to move the chamber music concert experience through the 21st century. Warhol Dervish actively seeks to blur the lines that separate classical music from other styles, to rehearse as would a band, to collaborate with improvisers, to actively seek alternative performance spaces, to collaborate with and learn from artists in other media. Highlights in 2012 included performances at the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival, the Toronto Summer Music Festival, and the Festival International de Lanaudière. The musicians of Warhol Dervish draw on their professional experience working with artists and playing in ensembles as diverse as Ensemble Caprice, Arion, Ensemble Kore, Patrick Watson, Lhasa de Sela, Richard Reed Parry, Socalled, Suuns, Bradyworks, l’Ensemble de l’SMCQ, La La La Human Steps, Claude Lamothe, I Musici, Theatre of Early Music, and the OSM.

With 6 solo albums to his name, he has performed all over the world for more than 10 years, and his list of collaborators knows no generational, social, cultural nor religious boundaries. Aside from countless festivals and venues around the world, Socalled has performed at Carnegie Hall (twice!), the Olympia in Paris, the Apollo theatre in Harlem and the Arsht centre in Miami. Trevor Alguire

Perish In The Light marks Trevor Alguire’s 6th album bringing with it maturity in songwriting seldom seen and rarely captured by only a select few of this country’s most prolific well-travelled veteran songwriters. Alguire draws from over a decade of touring across North America and Europe. With a star-studded lineup of instrumentalists believing in his songwriting, including PEI’s own Juno & ECMA award winning Catherine MacLellan, who sings a haunting duet alongside Alguire titled ”My Sweet Rosetta” worthy enough to stand the hair up on the back of your neck or bring a tear to your eye at first listen. With constant comparisons to early recordings of The Band, Bob Egan (Wilco, Blue Rodeo) also accompanies Alguire on this new recording with beautiful yet haunting pedal steel that drifts throughout several tracks only bringing these thoughtful words more weight and meaning. Miranda Mulholland (Great Lake Swimmers, Belle Star) adds timeless fiddle playing throughout while keys player Jesse O’Brien (Colin James, Bryan Adams) interweaves organ and piano magically like a thread subtly throughout adding depth to the pictures being drawn with further backing vocals by ECMA award winning Meaghan Blanchard. The album, recorded at Catherine North Studios in Hamilton, Ontario, features 10 stunning original songs, proving why Alguire is one of Canada’s most criminally underrated songwriters. Drop a needle on this album and dim the lights down low, and sit back as your mind travels through time with thoughts of past loves, lives lost and new hope found. Alguire has a story to tell, and with over 70 songs recorded in only a decade, this old soul travels through this world passionately sharing these stories with everyone he meets. All the while gathering and documenting these special moments and conversations while continuing his heartfelt journey assured to leave in his wake a lifetime of precious stories told. Trevor Alguire is no stranger to the road and spends much of his time playing tour dates in Canada and beyond, winning over fans one live show at a time. He's shared stages with Tom Cochrane, Jimmy Rankin, Danny Michel, Romi Mayes, and Martha Wainwright. Alguire will head out for a cross-Canada tour in November in support of his release of Perish In The Light.

New Swears
Feb
3
12:30 AM00:30

New Swears

Sammy J Scorpion, Scru Bar, Beej Eh, and Nick Nofun are New Swears, and New Swears are a garage-punk band specializing in melodic horseplay. They come from Ottawa, Canada… more specifically, they come from the Fun Boy Club House, a house in Ottawa they all lived in together with two bars, a mini ramp, a tattoo gun (but no actual tattoo artists), motorcycle tire burnout skids in the form of an inverted cross on the front walkway, rats and squirrels that made enough appearances indoors to be given names, murals everywhere, and a liberal ‘where should I piss?’ policy.

That paragraph right there might be enough to make your average jaded old punk hate them, but their saving grace is that there’s a big difference between try-hard and work-hard. New Swears are definitely the latter.

Despite regularly partying themselves into the emergency room, these dudes have still managed to put out a split tape and two full length LPs; gone on tours of the States, Canada, and Europe; self-released a shocking amount of shocking music videos (that always seem weirdly influenced by boy-band video aesthetics just as much as they are by CKY/Jackass and alcohol); and did it all without breaking anything more serious than legs and arms and TVs and walls, and without pissing off anybody who isn’t a cop or a landlord.

These guys will spend an hour trying to perfectly catapult a bucket onto a head, or flip a dart (that’s a cigarette for any non-working class Canadians out there) perfectly into a mouth until they nail it. The result is something incredibly stupid, that took an unreasonable amount of work and patience, but is surprisingly satisfying to watch happen.

The same goes for their music, it might seem simple, you might get the impression YOU could write songs that catchy and raw, but you can’t, you didn’t, and New Swears out-practiced, out-partied, and out-worked you to get it done. Deal with it.

The band has signed with Dine Alone records and will be releasing the Brand New Spot/Sugar Heavy Metal 7 inch on November 4th. More shows, shenanigans and a full length record will come in 2017.

Partner is the "mature" effort of small town lesbians Josée Caron and Lucy Niles (the brains behind beloved Sackville pop-punk outfit The Mouthbreathers). Borne of their bizarre and fortuitous friendship, Partner boldly goes where few have even desired to go, moving effortlessly from topics like sex objects and gross secrets to more serious themes like intimacy, friendship, and existential unease.Partner marries feminism and stadium rock riffage to produce a sound as queer as they are, and their arrival on the scene couldn't be more timely: "Partner's music is like what early 00s pop punk would be like if it was mixed with a reverence for classic rock era guitar solos. But unlike that generation's insistence of straight white dude figureheads that traded a sense of humour for self-righteousness, Partner's songs are funny as hell."After a freakishly productive year of writing, Partner will be heading to the studio in February 2016 to record their hotly anticipated debut album titledIn Search of Lost Time. Their enthusiastic and action-packed live set has led to them being named the "best new band in Canada" in the Globe and Mail, and although "Partner hasn't even released an album yet, [watching] one of their sets, it's clear right away that they've arrived fully formed." Influenced by acts as varied as Ween, Weezer, Neil Young, and Sum 41, the record promises to make you question everything you thought you knew about rock 'n' roll.

BLAKDENIM is a vanguard act that infuses hip-hop, funk, rock and soul with lyrical content that ranges from the serious to the absurd, the tone from sweet to heavy, all connected by head-nodding melodies. The line-up includes drums, bass guitar, keyboard, trumpet, saxophone, flute, female vocalist and an emcee.

The band has created serious buzz from live appearances at venues big and small including playing two consecutive summers at Ottawa Bluesfest, Festival dʼéte de Québec, two dates at Montreal International Jazz Festival and placing third at Indie Week Canada. The bandʼs current release “Complexus” as well as their debut offering “Vanguard(en)” have both been featured on CBC radio. Both releases have also received attention from commercial and college radio including appearances at the top of charts.

IndieBlender recently said of BLAKDENIM, “[they] are the complete package. If youʼre looking for passionate lyrics, infectious rhythms, expertly layered instrumentals, or simply something to move your feet to, this is a band you have to check out.” This is one indication that BLAKDENIM is realizing exactly what they set out to achieve when they came together in an Ottawa, ON basement in late 2012.

The Reverb Syndicate

The Reverb Syndicate was formed in late-2005 in Ottawa, Canada with the simple concept of exploring and re-imagining the music of groups from The Ventures to Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet via the soundtracks of old spy movies. This concept has led them to four independently-released albums, heavy gigging throughout Ontario and Quebec, recurring gigs in New York City, and two UK tours. In 2006, they introduced the masses to their blend of sixties spy movie music and classic surf rock with their debut album, ""Operation: Jet Set!"". In 2007, they blasted off into the stars with the space-themed ""Sputnik A-Go-Go"". In 2011, it was back to the wild west with ""Mondo Cacti"", where spaghetti westerns reign supreme. Now The Reverb Syndicate is ready to begin a new adventure, one that finds our heroes pitted against an evil uprising of the Commodore 64 (spoiler alert: the machines win). Let the "Odyssey" begin...
